Tidbits began in a small town in Montana, in the late 1980's. Dave Steele saw the paper and fell in love with the concept; so in 1993 he bought the rights to the name "Tidbits". He hired the original writer and he began publishing Tidbits of Billings, Montana. When readers picked up the paper they too fell in love with it and many asked how they could publish Tidbits in their town. Soon Dave began to sell publishing rights (licenses) to other publishers, and over the years built a nationwide family of Tidbits papers numbering well over 100. In April of 2002 Tidbits Media, Inc. of Montgomery, Alabama was formed to purchase Tidbits from Dave Steele, and the company headquarters was moved there the same year. The present owners continue the publisher licensing business model, but have added significant training and home-office support. They have the goal of making TIDBITS a nationally recognized brand.

Presently there are about 250 Tidbits publishers across the United States with a weekly readership of over 4 million.

At the local level, the mission of Tidbits is to entertain people while they wait. Some have called it a "lunch counter magazine", but it is more properly referred to as a "weekly entertainment tabloid".

Tidbits® of North Pinellas - "The little paper with a BIG IMPACT."
The following are excerpts that have appeared in actual Tidbits issues:

After playing hooky all morning, four teenage boys scurried into class with the tale that their car had had a flat tire. The teacher seemed very understanding, but informed them that they had nonetheless missed a quiz. However, she would kindly allow them to make it up, and instructed them to take their seats. The first question for the boys to answer: “Which tire was flat?”

A certain species of tern winters in Antarctica, and flies 11,000 miles every year to get there. Since the birds have a lifespan of up to thirty years, it is possible they could fly well over half a million miles during their migrations.

A very interesting golf course is located in North Dakota. Well, part of it is in North Dakota. The other part is in Canada. Tee off on the ninth hole in Canada, and find the cup in the United States. This particular ninth cup collected its first hole-in-one in 1934 when George Wegener hit the ball in one country and scored in another.

More collect calls are made on Father’s Day than any other day of the year.

In culinary lore, the cookie was invented when a baker placed a dab of cake dough in the oven to test the temperature. The Dutch appropriately dubbed the ensuing creation “koekje,” little cake.

A mother was teaching her three-year-old daughter the Lord’s Prayer. For several evenings, she repeated it after her mother. One night, she said she was ready to solo. Her mother patiently listened as each word was carefully enunciated – right up to the end. “And lead us not into temptation,” the girl prayed, “but deliver us some e-mail.”
